Spanish nationality for grandchildren of Spaniards

Yesterday, February 12th of 2006, the Council of Ministers passed a preliminary draft law which will modify the Civil Code as regards nationality, as had been established on the Statute of Rights for Spaniards abroad. These changes will allow for grandchildren of Spaniards and the children of Spaniards, who were not born in Spain because their parents and grandparents emigrated from the country in the past, to obtain the Spanish nationality. The Civil Code reform sought with this Law eliminates the requisite of having to be born in Spanish territory of Spanish parents, with which their children, grandchildren of the Spaniard who emigrated, may obtain the Spanish nationality.
